Marketing can be a great leading indicator for what lies ahead in the broader job market

The job market for marketers over the past ~2.5 years has been in a contracted phase of sharp declines and inclines. The past ~3 months have been a challenging phase with several folks marketing across sectors seeing their jobs getting displaced.

Looking deeper through this contracted phase, some patterns emerge, and going by some recent job posting trends, we MAY have something to cheer about after all! πŸŽ‰

Why?

🚨 Marketing can be a great leading indicator for what lies ahead in the broader job market. As companies prepare for uncertain times marketing budgets and departments often tend to be among the first to be negatively impacted. Circa April/May 2020 and again over the past few months.

🚧 Likewise, as companies start to find a new normal, they begin to set themselves up for growth again the marketing roles start to open up again! We saw early signs of this in Q1/Q2 2021.

πŸ“ˆ Around the last week of July, there’s again an uptick in marketing jobs in the US! I wish I could go back to see all-time data here.

While this is a great early sign for marketers, it can also be a leading indicator for folks who’ve been negatively impacted in other professions as well!
